Most of us do not wake up intending to live divided lives.
We do not plan to perform for approval. We do not consciously choose shame. We do not aspire to hide parts of ourselves.
And yet, if we are honest, many of us live reacting rather than choosing. We react to criticism. We react to silence. We react to stress. The reaction often feels automatic — as if something older than the moment is speaking through us.
So we try harder. We promise better. We adjust behavior. We manage image. We pursue affirmation. For a while, it works. Until it doesn’t.
Because behavior modification is not transformation.
The old reflex returns, not because you lack discipline, but because you are still living from a belief you have never fully examined.

For churches & small groups
Each part of the book traces a movement — distortion, bondage, interruption, legacy — that opens naturally into group conversation.
Four appendices give groups something to practice between meetings: grace-truth-time, idols and identity, and renewal in the small moments.
For churches and recovery ministries reading the book together, Leslie is glad to teach, answer questions, or lead a session.
